–Henderson County opened a shelter at 8am this morning at the Henderson County Athletics and Activity Center, 708 S Grove St, Hendersonville NC 28792. The shelter capacity is 50 residents and pet friendly.

9/29/24: Opened another shelter: Ebneyville Elementary School, 2875 Pace Rd, Hendersonville, NC. It is filling up as they are arilifting people to safety. Hwys 26 & 74 are open into the County from Rutherford County. Lorie asked if there is a way to get them some wi-fi. She is trying to connect to staff but with out cell and land services and now power it is difficult. Trying to dispurse staff through out the county, but cannot reach them.
Updated–10/7/24: Henderson resumed normal business operations Monday 7th, with a few staff members supporting other county efforts. Sunday Oct 6th was the last day the county had staff presence in a shelter. American Red Cross is providing operations and management for both shelters.

10/3/24: Update: Caldwell County’s shelter has been consolidated with Burke County’s Red Cross shelter as of 5pm on 10/1. Caldwell County DSS is fully functional for all business.

9/30/24-Burke continues to manage all mandated operations as we would on weekend or holiday.
10/1/24: Burke County Government intends to return to “semi” normal operations beginning 10/2/24. Unfortunately, the current DSS building lacks internet and phone services and will likely be without those services for the foreseeable future. Therefore, they will move all public facing operations to the Foothills Higher Education Center (2128 S Sterling St, Morganton). On October 2, 2024, they will be focused on setting up office space for those who cannot work remotely due to the nature of their work or the lack of electricity at their home. The plan is to be up and running to open to the public on October 3rd.

Cleveland County- CLOSED-9/27/ & 9/30/24:
Shelter: Cleveland county will be opening a shelter at 7 PM 9/27/24 at the social services/public health building
Reopening 10/1/24:–Status report:The DSS/Health Department building got power back around 4:00 p.m. on 9/30/24 and is operational today (Tuesday 10.1.24) at 200 South Post Road, Shelby, NC. Unfortunately, the storm damage caused surges and damage to our air conditioning units, so there is no air conditioning. The DSS has set up a triage desk in the main lobby, and economic services staff are there to meet with customers who need an application for replacement EBT. DSS runs the EOC shelter out of the DSS/Health Department Building. Approximately 16 residents are at the shelter, which has designated separate entrances for shelter guests and DSS customers. Red Cross volunteers help with shifts.
Cleveland County has set up a Citizen Phone Bank for all inquiries about services and resources for citizens impacted by Hurricane Helene. The number is 980.484.4636. DSS staff manned the phone bank on 9/30, and other county offices have volunteered to cover it. Approximately 25% of the county is without power. The remaining areas have extensive downed trees and power lines.
