Professional Capacity Committee Minutes

June 11, 2003

The Professional Capacity Committee met at 11:30 am on Wednesday, June 11 th at the Association Office. Members present: Earl Marett, Jerry Rhodes, Nancy Coston, Sarah Bradshaw, Neil Walters, and Lee Quick.

Plans for the June 12 th orientation session for new directors were finalized.

Brief discussion was held regarding recent requests for the Association to entertain the establishment, through the Professional Capacity Committee, of some type of leadership development program (such as one-day summits, etc.). The Committee agreed to pursue this if so directed by the Association’s Executive Board.

The Committee reviewed some preliminary mentoring matches made by co-chairs, Nancy Coston and Sarah Bradshaw. The Committee agreed for the co-chairs to make some immediate personal contacts with both new directors and mentors, make any necessary revisions and then implement these assignments.

The Committee discussed the procedure through which District Representatives are assigned annually. In some regions, it was discussed that common practice has been that the newest directors are asked to serve in this capacity and it was further discussed that this procedure is often not appropriate as the newest directors are just getting involved and would not be as prepared to handle such duties. The Committee agreed to have the co-chairs discuss District Representative assignment procedures with the upcoming Association President Larry Johnson and also agreed to forward a request for discussion of District Rep. assignment procedures to be added to the agenda for the Board’s upcoming retreat.

As a final order of business, the Committee again discussed the need to increase its membership. It was agreed that the Committee pursue the development of a membership that would include: Directors (new and others), Assistant Director and/or Program Manager, District Representatives, and a representative from NCSSA, State DSS, School of Social Work, and Institute of Government. The Committee felt that such membership is needed to accomplish the Committee’s scope of work and agreed to address this with the Association President, Larry Johnson.

With no further business to address, the Committee adjourned at 12:45 pm.
