Jordan Institute for Families Activities
Dan Hudgins, Lane Cook and Gary Nelson with the Jordan Institute for Families presented updates on their projects to the Professional Capacity Committee. Updates included (1) Community Engagement for Older and Disabled Adults, (2) Cornerstone IV: Working with Others/Working with Outcomes, (3) Capstone Leadership Training Pilot for Directors, (4) Distance Learning.
The Jordan Institute for Families has begun a state-level training task force with the Division of Aging and Adult Services and the Division of Social Services to provide community engagement for older and disabled adults. Counties will be selected to begin the program in Spring 2005. The program will work to achieve a parallel experience report for older and disabled adults. A motion was made for the Professional Capacity to support this program by Laura O'Neal. Robert Sanchez-Langston seconded the motion.
The second topic for discussion with the Jordan Institute was part four of their cornerstone series. Cornerstone IV: Working with Others/Working with Outcomes will be a four-day, skill-based training session that will help child welfare supervisors work in a collaborative environment to effect meaningful change (by being involved with partners within their agency, with community, and with families) for families. Pilot trainings will be conducted in groups across NC in Spring 2005. Sessions will be held at the regional training centers and at County DSS agencies for clusters of county child welfare supervisors. The Jordan Institute would like to partner with NCACDSS and link the program to FamilyNet and related initiatives.
The Capstone leadership training pilot for directors with a link to MRS Cornerstone Series and FamilyNet will begin the pilot program in 2005-06.
The Jordan Institute is beginning a distance learning program for the future of public social services. They will develop a child development curriculum pilot for distance learning in the child welfare training system for the Family and Children's Resource Program. They are also beginning an off-campus MSW program at the Forsyth County DSS. Mr. Johnson has agreed to forward a letter from the Jordan Institute to the listserv for volunteers to work on the process of developing a distance learning program. A survey will be sent out in the spring to determine county readiness for distance learning. Eight Meth trainings/overviews will be conducted across the state before June 3 and a more comprehensive Meth training will begin next year.
