NCACDSS
Professional Capacity Committee Meeting
February
12, 2003
The NCACDSS Professional Capacity
Committee held a meeting at the Association Offices on
The Committee continued discussion and planning on the issues of developing a Mentoring and Director Certification Program. The Committee also entertained Lee Quick and Neil Walters and welcomed their offers of assistance in both of these endeavors.
The following summarizes the Committee’s proposed plan for implementing a Mentoring and Director training and certification program:
The Professional Capacity committee is proposing to move ahead with the training and certification program in stages. The first stage would involve training in certain fundamentals needed to do the job. Later stages will add more training modules and will define the criteria for certification.
Based on work completed by the association in prior years, the committee is recommending that the following training modules be developed as the first phase.
Personnel
Working with the DSS Board
Media relations
Budget
Legal Requirements
Orientation to state agencies (jointly with Division staff)
The plan would be to
work with experts in the particular areas, such as State Personnel for
personnel issues,
All directors may attend trainings and the training will be approved for other staff who are in management positions and are part of the leadership development effort. Fees will be charged to the participants to cover the expenses.
IDEAS FOR MENTORING
Develop on-line resources for new directors to access
Create an informational packet to give to new directors. Could utilize some of the information Lee Quick and Neil Walters have.
Schedule a brief ‘Mentoring Session’ at all Regional Director Meetings. Include Team Reps., New Directors, Prof. Capacity co-chairs/members, Lee Quick, Neil Walters, Association Officers/Staff
Continue New Director Orientation Session at the annual Soc. Services Institutes
Schedule a meeting of all Team Representatives – develop a job description for team reps., bring them on board with Prof. Capacity activities regarding mentoring, strengthen their roles with new directors (outreach efforts, etc.)
Suggest that Team
Reps.( or others) invite new directors to spend a day
with them in
NOTE: Discussion revolved around taking the above approaches with mentoring rather than rely upon a ‘one-on-one’ approach. The consensus has been that a one-on-one approach would not be successful as many directors would probably not be able to commit to it.
With the upcoming Eastern and Western meetings scheduled, the Committee concluded the meeting by agreeing to have the co-chairs seek feedback on the proposals from directors present at the meetings and from the Association President, Glenn Osborne, and Association Executive Director, Karen George.
