Professional Capacity Committee

The Committee met several times during the year and made considerable progress in reaching several of the Association’s Strategic Plan goals.

On two occasions, the Committee met with the Executive Board to both gain support for proposed activities and to review progress.

During the year, the Committee began work to develop a Director’s Certification Program. The decision was made to ‘phase in’ to this and focus was placed on initial modules of training in the areas of personnel, budget, legal issues, media relations, and working with Boards. The Committee worked with staff from the Association Office and State DSS to begin the development of modules of training for all Directors. The Committee made plans to add a ‘leadership’ module during the next phase.

The Committee activities for the year also included efforts to provide much needed support for new directors. These efforts included:

•  Orientation Training – first session planned for June 12, 2003

•  Mentoring – efforts underway now to pair new directors with experienced directors

•  Special discussion sessions at regional meetings

•  On-line resource site – plans are for this to be developed and operable during FY 03/04.

The Committee prioritized their work with initial activities committed to providing support for new directors. Into next year, the Committee hopes to continue these efforts and resume progress in other areas as indicated above. The Committee plans to continually engage team representatives and as many Directors as possible to ensure that the Committee’s activities are both successful and sustained.
